Ha Long Bay Part II

By Vy Primozich - 8:00 AM

Last I left you in Halong Bay we were greeted with hot hand-towel and cold pressed watermelon juice just before the staff given us the key to our home for the next couple of days.

We roamed and explored aboat as the captain takes us further into the emerald bay.

Thousands of giant limestone islands fill the bay, and when it’s misty, it gives off the feeling of a haunted Jurassic Park. The sun warmed our faces, the sea looked like a smooth piece of jade, and it was absolutely glorious. Needless to say, we were in awe of the piercing limestones karsts as they rose majestically out of the bay.

We met many acquaintances from different parts the world.
And I made friend with this precious little lady from England.
Charlie has been traveling around the world with her parents over the last two months.
She has been to many beautiful and exotic places than anyone I know.
And she made a wonderful shipmate (aside from the mister, of course).

Having our stomach growling at us, we ducked back into the cabin and join everyone for a few bites and slurps of pina colada (Vietnam beer for him).

The four course meal was authentically scrumptious!
In between courses we stepped out to the balcony trying to take it all in.
The beauty of this place is surreal.

After lunch, we climbed back to the top deck.
The thin blanket of clouds filtering out just enough sun rays to keep us warm.
And the wind kept us cool and breezy.

And I dozed off, somehow.

My peaceful nap was short lived.
And we were ushered back on a small boat heading out for our first itinerary.
A short ride later and we were approaching Vung Vieng floating village.

Vung Vieng floating village has only 52 residences and a little over 200 people.
The villagers make their living through fishing and tourism on the water.
There are currently four such residential fishing villages in Halong Bay.
Many of the people living in these villages are descendants of the members of the fishing communities who have inhabited the area for hundreds and even thousands of years.
Today, the villages receive aid from the government as well as additional money from tourism in addition to their fishing incomes to help support and educate their families.

Each trunk boat carries a group of six.
Naturally, we paired with our new friends & their significant others.
Having situated ourselves inside a trunk boat, a native villager began to push and paddle us through the village.

It was a serene and tranquil place, with family homes all floating alongside the whole communities, as one big family.

After the fishing village, our guide continues to paddle us afloat the jade water passing luscious green mountains after giant limestone karts with green mountains...

Our boat ride ends at the village's oyster farm.

At the oyster farm, we were shown how the villagers farm oysters and cultivate pearls.

And this pearl is my cue to end it here...until next time.
