Pont des Arts: Bridge of Love

By Vy Primozich - 10:10 PM

Having wandered up & down the magnificent Avenue des Champs-Elysees to the Arc de Triomphe & back, we made our way to La Maison Angelina on Rue de Rivoli for their famous chocolate & pastries then we hopped, skipped & jumped through the park & to the Louvre before ended up at the famous bridge, Ponts des Arts. Paris is known as the city of love (and many other things) & this famous love padlocks bridge is the most romantic spot that stands above any of the amorous Parisian location.

Along the way we stopped & fed the birds...literally. Chris seemed to enjoy it way more than I did...I was a bit apprehensive.

What makes this bridge so special, other than its gorgeous view of the Seine River, is that couples have been coming here from all over the world to show their undying love. Built in 1804, the nine-arch metallic footbridge is a destination for couples wishing to memorialize their love.

Sweethearts from near & far visit the bridge to attach padlocks emblazoned with names or initials before throwing the locks' keys into the Seine River below as a symbol of their undying love. If you are interested in the history of where the romance of Pont des Arts bridge began, ABC News has the details. Now there are two bridges in Paris covered with these love locks. Be careful which bridge you choose because one (Pont des Arts) is for your committed love and the other (Pont de l’Archevêché) is for your lover.

Some say the only way to break the seal of love brought on by this love lock act is to find the key & unlock the padlock -- which is nearly impossible, since the keys lie at the bottom of the river. Yeah, good luck with that one...

Whether you're just admiring the ocean of locks or adding to the collection, these bridges are definitely two spots to stop while in Paris.
